Teaching

I believe the acting teacher’s job is to streamline the process of acting and help the student discover the artist within their authentic selves.

I’m influenced by Stanislavsky’s advice to his students. He said, “The person you are is a thousand times more interesting than the greatest actor you could ever be”. Acting, while seemingly the art of becoming other people, is actually the art of being completely oneself – under certain circumstances.

Here are my views on acting:

·      The best acting is truthful and spontaneous

·      The most exciting moments are unrehearsed

·      The actor is most interesting when they are relaxed.

·      Acting is fun

Finally, I always strive to impart to the students that what they do is important. What they do matters. Acting is a noble profession. I remind them that actors are worthy of respect. Actors are brave. They should be proud of what they do.

Testimonials

"Dan is a fantastically talented artist that embodies all the qualities of a great acting teacher. The first thing that immediately stood out for me was how well-informed and knowledgeable he was. It's easy to get lost between all the acting instructors and coaches in NYC and in LA, but being in Dan's class was a different experience. He has a very grounded and honest approach to the craft, and that is the very essence of acting. He has the ability to guide you down a path that makes you forget that you're “performing” and puts you in the driver's seat of the character you're portraying. I think any artist - beginner or advanced - can learn and grow from working Dan."   - Themo Melikidze, Actor, Patriots Day, 24:Legacy

"Working with Dan Winerman came at a very crucial time in my development as a young actor. He taught me the value of breaking down a scene in a few simple steps that free the actor from fictional circumstances and helps you find your truth in the scene. Working with Dan left me with even more wonderful tools to draw upon in my actor's toolbox and I highly recommend working with him."   - Hannes Otto, Actor, Juilliard alum

"Dan helped me get ready for an audition that required SIX separate sides to prepare, plus two additional monologues that he helped me find and rehearse. The skills I learned through Dan's tutelage helped me zero in on exactly what was necessary to focus on in these monologues. He also illuminated everything I could let go of and stop worrying about! I went into the audition with excitement and confidence in my preparation. I booked the job! I have applied the same principles he taught me in my subsequent auditions and have had consistently positive results. Thank you, Dan!"   - Dylan Cote, Actor

"Dan is an exceptionally supportive, thoughtful coach. I worked with him to prepare for MFA auditions. He was engaged with my whole process, starting with his genuine desire to understand why I chose to apply to the schools I did. Working with Dan gave me a structure that took away any sense of overwhelm I may have had if I was preparing alone. He kept his direction positive and professional. Dan has an eye/ear for shaping tone and clarity without sacrificing spontaneity. He's also an overall great person. I look forward to working with him again!"   - Karen Francis, Actor

"Dan was one of my first acting teachers in New York and his teaching still resonates with me today. His classes were always hilariously fun. I have classically trained at a British drama school and I have acted professionally in television and theatre for over seven years, yet when I go back to my actor's tool bag it is always Dan’s notes I use. His teaching methods are not "flowery' or 'pretentious" but practical and useful; his acting technique taught me how to use my life experience to bring the text naturally to life. What I find most refreshing about Dan’s class and his coaching is I feel safe to fail and not know it all. This is so important in the development of an actor."   -Natalie Edward-Yesufu, Actor/Producer

"My class with Dan was completely different from day one until our last class. Dan helped me to break away from my insecurities of what it means to understand acting, how each actor is different in his or her preparation, and how to simply break down a scene or monologue. Dan is not afraid to challenge you when he sees the potential and willingness to try things that scare you. I will always be thankful to Dan for introducing me to a technique that best works for me!"   -Ally Greer, Actor

"Dan taught me a valuable combination of acting techniques and the mindset of an actor. To this day, I still start working on a script using Practical Aesthetics and remind myself to focus on what I can control and let go of the things that are not within my control, just like Dan taught me. Dan teaches simple, quick and effective tools that will get you focused on what is essential in the scene, so that you can feel prepared even when you have a quick turnaround for an audition."    -Johanna Anttila, Actor

"Dan teaches acting techniques that are simple and easy to use, yet they significantly helped improve my acting skills. These acting techniques that I learned are very beneficial, because I can apply them to any scene I work on, making my performances more natural and truthful. I also really enjoyed Dan’s classes due to his creativity while working on scenes. Whether it be shifting the camera angle on Zoom, adding an activity to the scene, or connecting the objective of the scene to our personal lives, Dan always came up with great ideas to help bring any scene to life. I would definitely recommend taking Dan’s classes. I’ve learned so much from him, and taking these classes has made me love acting even more!"  - Andie Davis, Actor

"I would attend great classes with fantastic teachers, but then often find myself lost when it comes to applying what I have learned to the script. This was not the experience I had with Dan. What he teaches and his way of teaching is applicable and invaluable to my work! He makes me focus only on what is important and I now have more control over my craft, I am more calm and I have fun acting!"   - Tal Shashoua, Actor

"Dan has that rare and wonderful ability to not only help actors vastly improve their work on a particular monologue, but through his analysis and teaching methods, he also equips them with the tools needed to 'take the training wheels off' and do the work themselves!  He also makes it damn fun!  Thanks, Dan!"   - Mark Ellmore, Actor

"I’m so grateful that I attended Dan’s classes. I learned so much and really improved all around. Dan uses very effective techniques - teaching and guiding the student to understand the concepts and nature of acting. He teaches in a light-hearted, enjoyable way. [He] brought the best out of me and made me feel comfortable to really experiment and trust my instincts, giving me life-long tools to use in my acting journey."   - Tommy Caserto, Actor & Stunt Performer

"Taking Dan Winerman’s Practical Aesthetics course was probably the best decision I’ve made. He has such patience. He helps you understand how to be yourself in acting, rather than trying to act the character. As a newbie in this art form, and after taking basic Meisner and Hagen trainings, this technique helped me find my rhythm a lot more. I will take it a couple more times. I enjoyed Dan’s approach and his teachings very much!"   - Sevin Ceviker, Actor

"I worked with Dan in the beginning of my career when he directed me in a play and then again upon my return to NYC 15 years later. He offers a perspective and "take" on scenes that gets me where I want to be. He can dissect and illuminate a script in a way that helps me "make the the words my own", something I used to find more difficult. I am a comic actor (when they laugh) but he has an ability to bring drama and intensity out of me even when I can't find it myself."   - Sridhar Maruvada, Actor
